If It Isn’t Brexit, Don’t Fix It

This week’s Bank of England policy meeting did not produce a rate cut, as some felt it should have, but officials did weigh in on the issue of a potential exit of the UK from the European Union. Risking criticism of becoming too political ahead of the June 23rd UK referendum, the Bank walked a thin line between noting the significant negative economic consequences of leaving the EU and delivering pre-emptive stimulus in case that is the outcome. Alberta’s Disaster Shared and Felt Elsewhere

The tragedy that has befallen Fort McMurray this week has dealt another blow to a province already feeling the brunt of weaker oil prices. While we focus on the immediate impact to the people, infrastructure and Alberta’s economy, evidence of the spillover effects to industries from energy to insurance is already apparent.
